QuickCheck: Are RM30 burgers and RM40 'roti John' being sold at a bazaar in Johor?

A VIRAL video making its rounds since Tuesday (March 26) claims that burgers at a Ramadan bazaar in Johor Baru's Taman Suria are being sold for RM30.

It also claims that "roti John" is being sold for RM40 a piece, and some stalls charge 50 sen for plastic bags.

Are these sky-high prices for real?

VERDICT:

FALSE

In a statement on Friday (March 29), Johor Domestic Trade and Cost of Living director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo debunked the claims in the video.

“Following checks by eight ministry enforcement officers, we found that there were no stalls selling burgers at RM30 each, nor were there stalls selling ‘roti John’ at RM40.

“We found two stalls selling burgers for between RM6 and RM10.

“There are also five stalls selling ‘roti John’ with prices ranging from RM6 to RM15 each,” she said.

She added that the enforcement officers also did not come across stalls charging an extra 50 sen for plastic bags, as claimed in the same video.

“However, we have issued one compound notice under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 for failure to display price tags on goods sold,” she said.

Lilis Saslinda said the ministry had inspected 727 stalls in the state since March 12 and issued three compound notices so far.
