QuickCheck: Did several motorcyclists hold up traffic for a convoy in Negri Sembilan

SEVERAL days ago, a viral video emerged online of five motorcyclists stopping traffic at a junction to allow an eight-car convoy to jump a red light.

Did this really happen in Senawang, Negri Sembilan as alleged?

VERDICT:

TRUE

State police chief Dep Comm Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof said the incident happened at 6.47pm on Nov 7 and confirmed that the 33-second clip has since gone viral.

"By obstructing traffic, they have endangered the safety of other road users. We are now looking for all the offenders, including the car drivers," he said.

DCP Dzaffir said the so-called "traffic marshals" who obstructed and controlled traffic can be fined under Section 21 (1) of the Police Act.

The offenders can be punished under Section 94 of the same legislation which carries a fine of not more than RM500 or imprisonment not exceeding six months or both upon conviction.

DCP Dzaffir said the offenders can also be charged under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for not observing the traffic directions and signs.

For this, they can be fined between RM300 and RM2,000.
