OVER the last few years, a claim has occasionally emerged online that a stage in the Japanese fighting game Street Fighter V called the Kanzuki Beach is in fact set in Malaysia. Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

This is probably not a surprise to gamers – especially Street Fighter fans, as this fact has been known since late 2017 – but the answer is in fact, yes, as the “Kanzuki Beach” level in Street Fighter V.

Unique to the character Karin Kanzuki as the level has been described as her family's private beach in the game, this is the first time Malaysia has been featured in any edition of Street Fighter.

A further fact corroborating that the level is set in Malaysia is that Street Fighter V music composer Keiki Kobayashi has a track on his official Spotify, Apple Music and Last.fm pages titled “Kanzuki Beach -Malaysia Stage-”.

Ultimately, this local touch might also be due to the fact that the Malaysian office of Netherlands-based developer Streamline Studios worked on creating the world, stages and characters for Street Fighter V.

So yes, Malaysia's definitely packing a punch and making its mark on one of gaming's enduring franchises.
