QuickCheck: Was there a brawl at a JB eatery during the World Cup final?


ARGENTINA'S World Cup campaign ended in defeat and on a somewhat undignified note as some of its players were seen physically lashing out at their victorious Spanish opponents after the final whistle.

The aggression appeared to reverberate across the globe to our shores, as a viral social media video shows a brawl at a restaurant's outdoor area.

A group of men is seen in the 38-second clip throwing chairs at each other while a football match plays on a large screen in the background.

It is claimed that the incident occurred during the cup final at an eatery in Johor Baru.

Police said they arrested 12 people in connection with the early morning brawl during the screening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at a restaurant in Taman Daya, Johor Baru.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said they were informed of the fight at 5.40am on Monday (July 20).

"Acting on the information, we arrested 12 local men between 10am and 11am in Taman Setia Indah.

"The suspects are between 15 and 38 years old," he said in a statement.

Comm Ab Rahaman said further checks found that three of the suspects have criminal records.

"The motive behind the incident is still under investigation, and we urge the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could jeopardise the investigation," he said, adding that an application for a remand order will be made on Tuesday (July 21).

He said the case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.

If convicted, offenders face up to five years' jail, a fine, or both.
