MELAKA: Google picked Malaysia because governments are no longer changing every few years, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, a day after the tech giant pledged RM61bil in investments.
The Prime Minister said this was among the strengths named by Google’s president and chief investment officer Ruth Porat when he asked her for a frank assessment.
“She said they chose Malaysia because the country’s politics is stable, not in chaos. There is some grumbling here and there.
“Then she said it is stable. There are no riots, no governments changing like before. Four years, three or four prime ministers,” he said in his speech at the Majlis Anugerah Tangan Emas Perdana Menteri at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) here on Thursday (Nov 5).
Anwar said stable politics allowed for clear policies, which investors looked for.
“When politics is stable and there is clarity in economic policies, people know. An investor in AI knows our policy, the Industrial Master Plan,” he said.
Malaysia had three prime ministers between May 2018 and November 2022 - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Anwar took office after the 15th General Election.
