Melaka polls: Barisan wants to avoid repeat of bitter experience in Rembia, says Ab Rauf

ALOR GAJAH: Barisan Nasional wants to avoid another bitter experience in Rembia after the assemblyman elected on its ticket left the coalition, says Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

The Melaka Barisan chairman said voters should bear that experience in mind when choosing their representative in the state election.

He said Barisan was fielding Azril Aziz to represent Rembia residents in the state assembly, expressing confidence that the candidate would remain loyal to the coalition.

“We have had a bitter experience in Rembia. We entrusted someone with the responsibility, but he left us.

“This time, we are confident of our candidate's loyalty,” he said during a visit to Barisan’s election operations centre in Rembia here on Thursday (Nov 5).

Ab Rauf said winning Rembia would also contribute to Barisan’s efforts to strengthen its position in Melaka and lay the groundwork for recapturing the Alor Gajah parliamentary seat in the next general election.

"Alor Gajah must return to Barisan Nasional,” he said.

Former Rembia assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis won the seat on a Barisan ticket in the 2021 Melaka state election before his move to PAS was publicly announced in July 2024.

Muhammad Jailani polled 4,224 votes in a five-cornered contest in 2021, retaining Rembia with an 860-vote majority.

He first won the seat on a PKR ticket in the 2018 general election, securing 6,773 votes and a majority of 1,814.
