KUALA LUMPUR: A Taiwanese national pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday (Oct 4) to a charge of driving under the influence of drugs, resulting in injuries to a policeman who was performing escort duties for the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan.
Wei Fu-Chun, 52, a karaoke centre manager, was charged with driving a car under the influence of drugs, rendering him incapable of exercising proper control of the vehicle and causing injuries to Corporal Samsul Rahimi Sapari, 42.
The incident occurred at about 8.30pm on Oct 31 along Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields, here.
The charge was framed under Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurbatrisyia Mohd Razib did not offer bail, citing the accused's status as a foreign national and the absence of a permanent residential address in Malaysia.
However, lawyer Thayalan Moorthy, representing the accused, said the defence would submit a formal letter to the court should his client wish to apply for bail.
Magistrate Aliaa Anwar denied bail and fixed Jan 6 next year for mention. – Bernama
