CYBERJAYA: It is unfair for honest workers to pay taxes through their hard-earned salaries while the wealthy conceal their income through various layers and accounting procedures, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said fairness demands that taxation regulations are carried out equally.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, referenced the e-invoicing system as an important instrument to uphold justice, detect non-compliance and ensure everyone fulfils their responsibilities.
"Fairness in the taxation system is a pillar of civilisation and a key aspiration of Malaysia Madani," he said in his speech at the Inland Revenue Board’s (LHDN) Innovation and Integrity Day celebration here on Tuesday (Nov 3).
Anwar’s speech was read by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
Anwar also stressed that e-invoicing is not meant to burden the people or introduce new taxes, but to ensure all parties fulfil their obligations.
As of Monday (Nov 2), he said, a total of 2.14 billion e-invoices had been submitted by approximately 269,900 taxpayers.
Through enhanced compliance efforts, Anwar said more than 97,000 taxpayers voluntarily came forward to submit tax returns for previous years, with tax payable amounting to RM1.68bil.
"E-invoicing helps preserve fairness in the taxation system through ensuring transparent business transactions and detecting any instances of anomalies.
"At the same time, LHDN must be strict. However, a helping hand must be extended to those who need assistance or guidance.
"Always uphold integrity in what you do, but do not lose that human touch," he said.
