GEORGE TOWN: Police have recorded statements from four people, including a Penang assemblyman and his wife, over an alleged domestic violence case involving the politician.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said the other two individuals were family members.
He said police had received a report and opened an investigation under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
"We have recorded statements from four people so far, comprising the assemblyman, his wife and two other family members.
"We will complete the investigation and refer it to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for a decision," he told reporters during a press conference at the police contingent headquarters (IPK) in Penang Road on Monday (Nov 2).
Lim said police would also obtain confirmation from medical experts as part of the investigation, adding that the victim deserved protection.
"We are not doctors, so we need to get confirmation from medical experts.
"The victim should be protected and we will do what is necessary to ensure justice for everyone," he said.
He said no arrest had been made so far, adding that police would assess whether there were sufficient grounds to take further action.
Lim also urged the public not to sensationalise the matter, describing it as a private family issue.
"This is a domestic violence case involving a family matter, so there is no need to make it public unnecessarily.
"From the investigative aspect, we are looking into it and will follow the law," he said.
He stressed that police would handle the case in accordance with the law and ensure fairness to all parties.
