Digital platforms must ensure live streams comply with the law, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: Digital platform providers are responsible for ensuring that live stream content on their platforms complies with guidelines and the law, says Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister said platforms or service providers could face action if the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) finds that established guidelines and laws were violated.

"As for why the live stream of the attack on a teacher in Kuching, Sarawak was not blocked, that does not fall under MCMC's responsibility. It is up to Facebook or other platforms such as YouTube.

"When they provide live-streaming facilities, they must ensure that the content being broadcast does not violate guidelines or the law," he said

He spoke to reporters after officiating at the "Pelajar Pemacu Negara - Sayangi Diri, Jauhi Dadah dan Hargai Kehidupan" programme here on Wednesday (Oct 28).

The programme brought together 336 students from 122 secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya and was also attended by Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus.

Fahmi said MCMC was investigating the matter and that it could take action against the relevant platform or service provider if the investigation uncovered violations of established guidelines and laws.

In a related development, he reminded media organisations to exercise caution and avoid circulating closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage related to cases still under police investigation.

He said he had asked media organisations to take note of the matter and would engage with the Malaysian Media Council to ensure it was addressed appropriately.
