KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia looks forward to strengthening trade and investment ties with Brazil and advancing cooperation between Asean and Latin America under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s continued leadership, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Congratulating Lula on his election victory, the Prime Minister said the hard-fought contest had given the Brazilian leader a renewed mandate from his people.

“My heartiest congratulations to my dear friend, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, on his historic election victory in Brazil.

“There is much that we can do together: strengthening trade and investment, advancing cooperation between Asean and Latin America and giving greater substance to the partnership between our two countries,” he said in a social media post.

The Prime Minister said Lula’s lifelong commitment to social justice, poverty reduction, and ensuring developing countries were heard had earned respect beyond Brazil.

“I have always valued our friendship, and I share his conviction that the Global South must have a stronger voice in shaping a fairer international order,” he said.

Lula secured a fourth presidential term after defeating Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s presidential run-off on Oct 25. He won about 51.8% of the vote against his rival’s 48.2%.

Lula, who turns 81 today, was first elected in 2002.
