Floods: 90 areas in Kedah designated as hotspots

ALOR SETAR: A total of 90 areas in Kedah have been identified as flood risk hotspots, according to the state disaster management committee secretariat.

It said that currently, only Yan district is experiencing floods with 202 people from 69 families relocated to three relief centres as of Tuesday (Oct 27) morning.

This is a slight increase from 176 victims (61 families) on Monday (Oct 26).

The secretariat said 101 people from 29 families are taking shelter at SK Teroi, 43 people (22 families) are at SJK(C) Pei Eng, and 58 people (18 families) are at Dewan Lestari Guar Chempedak.

"High-risk areas we are focusing on in the Kedah river basin area are Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pendang and Pokok Sena.

"In the Muda river basin, high-risk areas include Kuala Muda, Baling, Sik and Kulim," the secretariat said in a statement.

It also said heavy downpours are expected, based on information from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) regarding the onset of the 2026/27 North-East Monsoon which is expected to last until March.

"During the early phase of the monsoon, three to five episodes of continuous heavy rains are expected, potentially causing floods in low-lying areas and locations near rivers.

"The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and other agencies under the state disaster management committee are prepared in terms of assets, logistics and manpower to respond to any eventualities.

"We have 927 representatives from APM personnel and a total of 3,658 personnel from the relevant agencies involved," it said.

The secretariat cautioned people to stay alert to warnings issued by the relevant agencies and follow updates on the current flood situation, including from MetMalaysia.

"Monitor water levels in nearby rivers and the surroundings of your home.

"Keep a close watch on your children's movements, especially when they play in the neighbourhood.

"Be prepared to evacuate if water levels rise suddenly and conditions become unsafe.

"Pack important documents, medications and essential supplies when evacuating," it said.
