WHAT was supposed to be a much-anticipated birthday celebration for Xu Zhi Kang ended in tragedy after the teenager died from injuries sustained in an electrical accident during a temple procession in Kedah, Sin Chew Daily reported.
Five of his basketball friends brought his favourite chocolate cake to his wake on Thursday, the day he would have turned 16.
The gesture moved many to tears.
Liang En Quan, 18, said the group had planned the celebration three months earlier.
“We are all currently working and have some money saved. So, this year, we especially wanted to give him a lavish birthday.
“We planned to take him out for a nice meal, have some fun and go for karaoke, just to make him happy,” En Quan said.
Zhi Kang was among three teenagers injured on Oct 13 when a flagpole they were carrying during a Nine Emperor Gods Festival procession came too close to a high-voltage power line.
Zhi Kang suffered burns to about 80% of his body and died on Wednesday, eight days after the incident.
The other two teenagers have since been discharged from hospital.
