IPOH: An unemployed man was sentenced to four years’ jail and one stroke of the cane for robbing his 77-year-old grand-aunt of a pair of gold earrings while armed with a screwdriver.
Mohamad Fitri Abdul Aziz, 39, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 392, read together with Section 397, of the Penal Code before Sessions Court judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad on Thursday (Oct 22).
He committed the offence at a house in Kampung Tanjong, Kampung Kepayang, Simpang Pulai, at about 10.30am last Friday.
According to the charge, Mohamad Fitri robbed the victim while armed with a screwdriver.
In mitigation, Mohamad Fitri, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lighter sentence and said he had not initially intended to commit the offence.
When asked by the court to explain, he said he acted after feeling hurt by the victim.
“I was hurt. She had previously accused me of stealing at her house,” he said.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Hairol Gemain told the court that the victim was injured during the incident and submitted that the robbery had been planned.
The court ordered Mohamad Fitri to serve the four-year jail term from the date of his arrest.
