PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman has made over 180,000 arrests this year in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse.
Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that from January to September, the department recorded a total of 167,601 cases, resulting in 186,257 arrests nationwide.
"This reflects the comprehensive enforcement measures undertaken by the NCID to curb drug trafficking and abuse," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 21).
"During the same period, the NCID also recorded seizures of drugs and poisons worth RM2.85bil compared with RM1.98bil a year ago.
"The increase of RM865.45mil, or 43.63%, highlights the significant value of seizures resulting from enforcement action against drug trafficking and controlled substances."
Selangor recorded the largest number of cases with 23,195, leading to a total of 26,368 arrests.
It was followed by Kedah with 18,843 cases and 19,601 arrests, and Kelantan with 18,008 cases and 19,712 arrests.
"In terms of drug seizures, the NCID recorded 36,612.72kg of drugs and 30,580.19 litres of liquid drugs seized from January to September.
"It also recorded seizures of substances covered under the Poisons Act 1952 totalling 45,382.7kg and 106,092.56 litres during the same period.
"The NCID takes the growing threat of drug trafficking seriously, particularly activities involving organised syndicate networks, various smuggling methods, and the exploitation of technology and communications channels to carry out criminal activities.
"As such, the NCID will continue to strengthen its enforcement strategies through more proactive, integrated and intelligence-driven approaches to ensure that all drug trafficking activities can be detected and appropriate action taken.
"Priority will continue to be given to efforts to dismantle drug supply networks, curb smuggling activities, and identify individuals and groups who play key roles in driving drug trafficking activities in the country.
"The NCID urges the public to continue playing their role as the eyes and ears of the police by providing information that could assist enforcement action," he said.
