MCMC records statement of individual over FB content allegedly insulting to Negri royal institution

CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded the statement of an individual to assist in an investigation of Facebook content suspected to contain elements insulting the Negri Sembilan royal institution.

In a statement on Wednesday (Oct 21), MCMC said the action was taken to complete an investigation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"The individual believed to be operating the account appeared at the Cyberjaya police station today to assist in the investigation, and one mobile phone and one SIM card were seized," MCMC said.

It is investigating content uploaded through the Facebook account "Che GuBard", which is suspected of containing elements insulting the Negri Sembilan royal institution, as well as touching on Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir and members of the Negri Sembilan royal family.

MCMC said it took a serious view of any use of online platforms that could incite hatred, insults or disrespect towards the royal institution.

"Freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and in accordance with the laws of the country. Any further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and the applicable legal process," MCMC said. – Bernama
