SHAH ALAM: Two individuals, including a public figure, were detained in connection with a suspected khalwat (close proximity) offence in Petaling, Selangor, on Thursday (Oct 15).
The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) confirmed that the arrests were made at about 6pm.
JAIS director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the two individuals were detained to assist investigations under Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.
Those convicted under the provision face a fine of up to RM3,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
In a statement on Friday (Oct 16), Mohd Shahzihan also advised Muslims against publicly shaming those involved in the case.
He urged the public to refrain from engaging in speculation, debates or spreading defamatory claims that could tarnish the reputation of any individual.
Previously, it was reported that a senior leader of a political party and a woman had been detained by JAIS at a residence in Petaling Jaya on Thursday (Oct 15).
Astro Awani had reported the 44-year-old politician was detained at about 6pm by a five-member JAIS enforcement team.
