IPOH: A temporary relief centre (PPS) has been opened at SK Matang in Perak following a storm on Wednesday (Oct 14).
A Malaysian Civil Defence Force spokesman said that the relief centre had been opened at 6.30pm Wednesday.
"Four areas were affected by the storm, namely, Kampung Changkat Baru Matang, Kampung Teluk Kertam, Kampung Melawati and Kampung Hujung Matang," he said in a statement.
He said that 18 families, comprising 45 people, were staying at the relief centre.
Of the evacuees, 17 were men, 15 were women and 13 children.
He added that there were also 46 families, comprising 82 people, registered as affected but who were not staying at the relief centre.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that more than 35 houses were damaged by the storm in the Larut, Matang and Selama district.
District APM chief Capt (PA) Ahmad Fakhrur Razi Md Noor told Bernama that the department received a report on the incident from the Matang sub-district penghulu office.
"Initial investigations found that the incident was caused by heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that lasted for about an hour from 3pm.
"The severe weather caused the roofs of several houses to be blown off, while trees were uprooted in several villages around the Matang subdistrict," he told Bernama Wednesday.
Capt Ahmad Fakhrur said 12 APM personnel, supported by three operational vehicles and five chainsaws, were deployed to the affected areas to conduct monitoring and clean-up operations.
He said the operation was also carried out in collaboration with other rescue and technical agencies, including the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) and the Public Works Department (JKR).
