Mitra: 8,690 SPM, STPM candidates benefit from Tamil language empowerment programme

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 8,690 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) candidates nationwide have benefited from the 2026 Tamil Language Excellence Empowerment Programme.

The Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (Mitra), under the Human Resources Ministry, said the programme involved a total allocation of RM901,680.

It said the initiative was implemented in collaboration with the Education Ministry as part of the Madani Government's strategic efforts to improve academic achievement and Tamil language proficiency.

"This initiative also ensures that students from the Indian community get the necessary support, in addition to emphasising focused academic preparation by boosting students’ motivation, self-confidence and ability to face examinations,” it said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 14).

Meanwhile, in the same statement, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said the programme's implementation demonstrated the Madani Government's ongoing commitment to ensuring that comprehensive attention is given to the educational development of the Indian community, particularly in helping students achieve excellence in public examinations.

He said that, of the total beneficiaries, 7,897 were SPM candidates, while another 793 were STPM candidates who sat for the Tamil language paper nationwide.

"We want to ensure every student has the opportunity to achieve excellence, regardless of their background. Through Mitra, we are not merely providing educational assistance, but implementing academic interventions that can directly impact student achievement.

"Tamil language is not merely a subject to be mastered for examinations, but it's a treasure trove of language, culture and identity that must be preserved by future generations,” he added.

Earlier, Ramanan officiated the programme, which was attended by nearly 300 SPM candidates and 50 educators from Selangor, at the Omnia Auditorium, Menara BAC, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

The statement added that Mitra would continue to intensify educational initiatives through Kalvi Madani, including strengthening strategic collaborations with the Education Ministry, state education departments and relevant institutions, to ensure that more students from the Indian community could benefit from effective and targeted academic development programmes. - Bernama
