PETALING JAYA: The increase in the annual Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT) grant to RM10,000 can allow KRT committees to organise more meaningful community programmes, say some Selangor KRT committees.
SS15 Hexagon KRT secretary Ramlah Ahmad said the increase allows more programmes covering health awareness, community safety, the environment and multicultural celebrations to be organised for various groups such as senior citizens, youths, families and the vulnerable ones.
“This is a positive step towards recognising the contributions of KRT committees in strengthening neighbourhood unity, safety and community well-being,” she said.
However, Ramlah called for more attention to be given to upgrading ageing KRT centres, maintaining facilities and reducing administrative burden.
“I also hope the government will encourage stronger partnerships between KRT committees, local authorities, non-governmental organisations and the private sector,” she added.
When tabling Budget 2027, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the annual allocation for KRTs nationwide will be increased to RM10,000, starting from Jan 1, to empower grassroots communities.
SS14 KRT former deputy chairman Azusaini Azis said the RM10,000 grant should be a catalyst for partnerships, volunteerism and community contributions, rather than just as a fund for community projects.
“Greater collaborations with local councils, government departments, healthcare providers, schools, NGOs and businesses could help KRTs stretch their resources further,” he said.
Taman Sri Muda Zone 8 KRT president Mogan Thangavelu said the increase allows his committee to organise more activities to foster unity among the residents.
“We will have more funds to hold programmes such as gotong-royong and blood donation drives,” he said.
