IPOH: Parents in Perak will be informed today whether schools in the state will remain closed tomorrow due to worsening haze conditions, says Datuk Khairudin Abu Hanipah.
The state education committee chairman said an announcement would be made between 2pm and 3pm after considering the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings.
“If some areas are still recording unhealthy API readings, schools in those areas will remain closed.
“The safety and health of pupils are our priority,” he said at the Perak state-level National Sports Day 2026 celebration yesterday.
He added that teaching and learning would continue as usual through home-based learning, as the Education Department had made the necessary arrangements.
On Friday, educational institutions in Kinta Utara, Kinta Selatan and Kuala Kangsar were ordered to close due to the haze.
On a separate matter, Khairudin said police were investigating claims that two teenage brothers had been bullied in separate incidents at a secondary religious school in Chemor.
He added that the authorities had taken the necessary steps, including holding a meeting between the parties involved to seek a resolution.
It was reported on Monday that single mother Noor Azwani Ahamad, 43, claimed her two sons had been assaulted and bullied in separate incidents.
Khairudin also said police were investigating an alleged incident involving an 11-year-old boy who was reportedly assaulted by his teacher at a school in Pengkalan Hulu on Sept 23.
Although discussions had been held between the parties involved to seek a resolution, he said the boy’s parents might be dissatisfied with the outcome.
“When a police report is lodged, the matter is handed over to the police for investigation.
“If any offence or breach is established, the police will take further action,” he said.
Meanwhile, between 3,000 and 5,000 people attended the Perak state-level National Sports Day celebrations yesterday.
“Although the weather has not been favourable, the response from the people of Perak has been good, and this morning’s celebrations have been running smoothly,” Khairudin said.
