Nurseries urged to stop outdoor activities amid haze

PETALING JAYA: Childcare centres have been urged to suspend outdoor activities amid the haze to protect children from exposure to polluted air.

The Social Welfare Department, under the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, has instructed operators to ensure their premises remain safe and conducive for children.

“Any action related to the operation of childcare centres must take into account the current Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in their respective areas, while complying with the National Haze Action Plan and directives from the relevant authorities,” it said in a statement issued on Friday (Oct 9).

The ministry said that where childcare centres could continue operating, operators and parents should discuss suitable childcare arrangements based on local conditions, family needs and the best interests of the children.

It also urged operators and parents to monitor API readings issued by the Environment Department and follow advice from the Health Ministry and directives from the authorities.

“This approach is important to ensure children's welfare continues to be protected without neglecting the needs of parents, particularly those who are working.

“Children's health and safety must always be the primary consideration in every decision,” it said.

The ministry added that cooperation and good communication between childcare operators and parents were essential to ensure children continued to receive proper care and protection throughout the haze period.
