Heavier punishment sought for cable thieves

THE government is considering heavier punishment for those involved in cable theft, says Nga Kor Ming (pic).

The Housing and Local Government Minister said the government, through the Home Ministry, is looking at possibly making amendments to existing laws regarding cable theft.

“The issue of cable theft is being viewed very seriously by the Cabinet.

“This is due to the frequent cases of our public transit systems like LRT and MRT experiencing issues, not due to their own operational failure, but due to cables being stolen by syndicates.

“This is to ensure the safety and well-being of the people is safeguarded,” he said during Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Nga also reminded the public that accepting stolen cables is also a crime.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) on the government’s efforts to crack down and deter the theft of cables.

This comes following frequent reports of attempted thefts of cables from LRT and MRT lines, with the recent incident of power disruption to the MRT Putrajaya Line on Sunday due to cable theft.
