KUALA LUMPUR: Cheltenham Ladies’ College in England has named its new sixth form centre the Zarith Sofiah Centre in honour of Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia.

The news was posted on His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's Facebook on Friday (Oct 2).

The announcement was made on Tuesday (Sept 29), with Raja Zarith Sofiah becoming the first alumna of the prestigious girls’ school to have a building named after her.

Raja Zarith Sofiah was a student at Cheltenham Ladies’ College for five years from 1972 to 1977 before pursuing higher education at the University of Oxford.

Cheltenham Ladies’ College executive principal Eve Jardine-Young said the institution was honoured to name the new centre after Raja Zarith Sofiah in recognition of her lifelong contributions and service.

"On behalf of the parents, pupils and staff of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, past, present and future, we are delighted to open this new sixth form centre and name it after Raja Zarith Sofiah in recognition of her contributions and service throughout her life," she said.

Jardine-Young said the centre was the only building at the college named after an alumna.

"We look forward to welcoming new pupils in 2027 and sharing the development of this centre with Her Majesty," she said.
