Leverage ECRL to boost economy, attract investment, says Kelantan Sultan

KOTA BHARU: Sultan of Kelantan Sultan Muhammad V has called on the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, to capitalise on the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), which is expected to begin operations in January 2027, to improve logistics efficiency and attract new investments to the state.

His Royal Highness said the infrastructure should be leveraged to expand market access and enhance Kelantan's appeal as a competitive investment destination.

"I hope that the federal government will upgrade the main roads, particularly those leading to the transit-oriented development centre in Bandar Baru Tunjong, Kota Bharu, and the cargo-oriented development centre in Cherang Tuli, Pasir Puteh,” he said in his address in conjunction with his 57th birthday at Istana Balai Besar here on Tuesday (Sept 29).

Sultan Muhammad V also expressed gratitude over Kelantan's economic performance, which continues to show resilience and positive growth.

"Last year, I was informed that Kelantan's economy grew by 4.1 per cent, compared with 3.3 per cent the previous year.

"The services sector remains the main pillar of the state's economy, contributing 71.8 per cent, followed by the agriculture sector at 19.8 per cent,” he said.

Sultan Muhammad V expressed optimism about the state's economic prospects, particularly with the expected operation of two new industrial areas in Machang and Tok Bali, Pasir Puteh, next year.

His Royal Highness said growth in the construction sector, driven by high-impact projects, as well as mining activities based on the existing natural resources, had been supported by improved connectivity and major infrastructure development.

"I am confident that my state can become a leader in the blue economy on the East Coast by sustainably harnessing coastal resources, maritime ecosystems, fisheries and logistics, in line with the national agenda.

"I welcome the federal government's emphasis in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), presented by Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) last year, on the development of strategic industries in the blue economy, including an integrated fisheries hub, coastal and maritime tourism, as well as the shipbuilding and ship repair industry,” he said.

Sultan Muhammad V said the East Coast Economic Region Development Council should play a role in ensuring that the Tok Bali Industrial Park becomes the core of the economic development.

"I also welcome the state government's efforts to explore the potential of the green economy, including renewable energy, as a source of economic growth.

"I hope this initiative will generate new sources of state revenue while ensuring environmental sustainability,” he added.- Bernama
