PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that it is investigating several issues linked to losses suffered by UiTM Holdings Sdn Bhd in 2023, including RM42mil allegedly paid for purposes unrelated to a 50MW solar project in Gambang, Pahang.
MACC said the payments were allegedly made without the approval of the company's board of directors (BOD).
In a statement on Sunday (Sept 27), it said the investigation was still ongoing due to the complexity of the case, which involved technical aspects, and was pending further instructions from the prosecution.
The anti-graft agency also said it would look into other relevant issues, including weaknesses in governance as highlighted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“MACC welcomes the Prime Minister's concern and firmness in addressing and resolving weaknesses that contributed to the losses suffered by UiTM Holdings Sdn Bhd,” it added.
Previously, Anwar had ordered a review of the governance and management of UiTM Holdings amid concerns over the company's losses.
The Prime Minister said the review should be undertaken with the UiTM vice-chancellor and the Prime Minister's Department, which would provide support where necessary.
“Please look into UiTM Holdings and find ways to work together with the vice-chancellor.
“The Prime Minister's Department and my office will provide cooperation and push for this,” he said in response to a question urging a review of UiTM Holdings’ management over claims that the company had recorded losses of more than RM100mil.
The issue was raised during a question-and-answer session at the Himpunan Mesra Alumni UiTM at the Dewan Agung Tuanku Canselor here on Saturday (Sept 26).
MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman, when contacted, confirmed that the investigation was being conducted under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
He said MACC would strive to complete the investigation as soon as possible in an independent and fair manner.
