KUALA LUMPUR: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and political parties have reiterated the call for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into allegations of a ‘corporate mafia’ being practised in the country in a protest outside the Sogo Shopping Centre here on Sunday (Sept 27).
In a statement, the HentiBungkamNGO secretariat said civil society groups and the public were tired of what it described as broken promises by the government.
On Feb 11, Bloomberg published an article titled “Who’s Watching Malaysia’s Anti-Corruption Watchdog?”, detailing allegations that a group of businessmen, allegedly working with certain MACC officers, had pressured corporate figures in takeover cases.
The report later described this situation as a “corporate mafia” network.
The groups outlined three demands: an RCI into the alleged corporate mafia issue; an end to selective justice and an end to efforts to silence those who speak out.
Among recent incidents cited by the secretariat were the detention of Mandiri executive director Amir Hariri Abdul Hadi and finance director Dobby Chew, which the movement claimed was an intimidation tactic.
Meanwhile, Amir, who also spoke at the rally, claimed that what happened to him and Chew reflected the “modus operandi of the corporate mafia”.
Among those present at the protest were former Subang MP Wong Chen, who represented Parti Bersama Malaysia, Bersih, DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) and social activist Hishamuddin Md Rais.
