KUALA LUMPUR: Museum institutions must continue to evolve beyond being repositories for historical treasures and serve as spaces for education and learning, says Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang (pic).
The National Unity Minister said these institutions could connect the current generation with the nation’s history, identity and heritage.
He said the Merdeka Textile Museum (MTM) at Merdeka 118 was among institutions showcasing Malaysia’s textile heritage through a contemporary and interactive approach.
“The museum’s key attraction is the Azah Aziz Treasure Collection, comprising 240 traditional garments and 69 pieces of classic jewellery. The personal collection of the late cultural icon Azah Aziz include songket sarong, baju kurung limar and tekat emas (gold-thread embroidery).
“These treasures are not merely exhibition pieces but serve as an important medium for preserving the nation’s history, textile art and cultural heritage.
“Notably, the MTM adopts a contemporary approach that appeals to the young generation through digital technology, interactive installations and augmented reality experiences, breathing new life into efforts to introduce traditional motifs, weaving techniques and textile arts to the public,” he said in a Facebook post, Bernama reported.
Aaron said the ministry, through the Department of Museums Malaysia, is committed to strengthening the national museum ecosystem to ensure museums remain relevant, inclusive and closely connected with the community.
