CROATIAN mountain climber Mauro Persic, who was found injured after spending eight days alone on Mount Kinabalu, has expressed regret over the risks he took to go up the mountain, Harian Metro reported.
In a Facebook post, the 46-year-old said the ordeal had strengthened his belief in human compassion.
He said the rescue operation was a humbling experience, particularly when rescuers and porters had to carry him down after he became injured and too weak to continue on his own.
A porter, believed to be about 15, left a particularly strong impression on him.
Persic said he could feel the strain on the porter’s body as the boy carried him down the mountain.
Persic was rescued by a multi-agency operation after suffering injuries to his right leg and ribs, as well as minor wounds to his hand.
Separately, Sabah Deputy State Secretary Datuk Jamili Nais said imprisonment should be considered as a deterrent for those who violate Mount Kinabalu regulations.
> A red-bellied piranha has allegedly been caught at Klau Dam in Raub, prompting the Pahang Fisheries Department to order an investigation, Sinar Harian reported.
The department’s director, Roslan Abu Hasan, said an angler reported catching the fish and details of the alleged discovery were shared on social media.
“The claim may be true, or it may be inaccurate, but we will investigate the matter,” he said.
A social media post claimed that a predatory fish native to the Amazon River basin had been caught by a local angler at the dam and urged the public to remain vigilant.
The post also claimed that the specimen differed from the red-bellied piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri, a species reportedly found in Klau Dam previously.
