KUALA LUMPUR: There have been no reports of Malaysian students’ health being affected by the haze in Indonesia so far, says Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
The Higher Education Minister said his ministry was monitoring the situation of Malaysian students in Indonesia through the Education Malaysia (EM) office there.
“As of now, there have been no reports related to health effects despite the serious haze conditions there,” he told reporters when visiting the media lounge at the Umno general assembly yesterday.
Zambry also said the EM office in Indonesia would keep his ministry abreast of the haze situation and its effects on Malaysian students.
He also said that the haze’s effects would depend on the policies or operations of Indonesian universities.
“If those universities have serious problems, then the respective university might be closed, and this will also involve our students,” he said, Bernama reported.
Based on previous reports, the haze situation in Indonesia was said to be worsening, particularly in Kalimantan, following forest and peatland fires.
Indonesian authorities are intensifying efforts to tackle the fires and enhance coordination with neighbouring countries through the Asean mechanism to address cross-border haze.
