KOTA KINABALU: The state government has been urged to provide free clean drinking water or install water dispensers in all 1,300 schools across Sabah, with priority given to rural areas and offshore islands amid ongoing hot weather.
Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk James Ratib said the initiative is vital to ensure student welfare and basic amenities, particularly during dry spells when dehydration risks are higher.
Speaking after inspecting the SMK Balaban Jaya construction site in Beluran on Monday (Sept 7), James highlighted the economic struggles faced by B40 families, noting that many students cannot afford to purchase extra drinks at school.
"Even if parents provide pocket money, it is often barely enough for meal expenses," James said. "While many students bring water from home, it is often insufficient to last through an entire school day during extreme heat."
James suggested the state government spearhead the effort by installing at least one water dispenser per school—prioritizing island and remote institutions—without waiting for federal action from the Ministry of Education.
During his visit to Beluran, James also inspected progress on several school construction, development, and refurbishment projects. The district made headlines earlier this year following public outcry over dilapidated infrastructure, which forced some students to attend classes under temporary tents due to unsafe premises.
