MACC probes delay in fertiliser supply to Kedah

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating possible wrongdoings in the delay in distribution of fertiliser to Kedah padi farmers.

The investigation follows a complaint by the Malaysian Padi Farmers Brotherhood Association (Pesawah) on Aug 26 over the distribution of additional Baja 3 fertilisers.

Pesawah had complained about a delay in fertiliser supply by the agents appointed by the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) to meet the needs of the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) area covering 100,000ha.

A source said the probe was not limited to possible criminal elements and would also cover any weaknesses in governance.

MACC said it had so far recorded a statement from a Pesawah witness and received several related documents.

“MACC welcomes the Prime Minister’s call and concern over the issue and has contacted KPKM and Mada for further investigation,” the source said.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had asked MACC to probe the matter.

He noted that the delay had caused padi farmers to become victims, adding that such a situation should not have happened and must not be allowed to recur.

MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman confirmed that an investigation had been opened under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.

Meanwhile, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu also said the delay must be investigated transparently and thoroughly.
