PETALING JAYA: PAS delegates have unanimously approved a resolution to strengthen Malay-Muslim political unity ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).
The resolution, tabled by PAS ulama council representative Zulqarnain Hassan, was approved after being debated and supported by PAS Pahang delegate Nasaruddin Hassan at the 72nd annual muktamar here yesterday.
Nasaruddin said efforts to strengthen Malay and ummah unity did not mean compromising PAS’ principles or those of Islam.
The muktamar also approved motions on the healthcare workforce, agriculture and the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the alleged “corporate mafia” issue.
Separately, the muktamar approved without debate a motion from Baling division, urging the Federal Government to stop issuing new gambling licences and strengthen the powers of state governments to curb such activities.
PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, who chairs the muktamar’s motions committee, said recent court decisions involving gambling premises licences in Kedah highlighted state governments and local authorities’ legal limitations.
He said the muktamar urged the Federal Government to review the policy on issuing and renewing gambling licences, including considering an end to new licences.
It also called on state governments, particularly those in the State Government 4 (SG4) grouping of Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Perlis, to strengthen existing laws, local council policies and administrative mechanisms.
PAS MPs were also urged to raise the matter in the Dewan Rakyat and propose amendments to federal laws to give states clearer powers to impose tighter restrictions on gambling premises.
