BAYAN LEPAS: A 23-year-old local woman and a 22-year-old Myanmar national have been detained after a newborn boy was found inside a sanitary bin in a toilet at the Penang International Airport on Monday (Aug 31).
Southwest district police chief ACP Anuwal Ab Wahab said police received a report after a cleaner heard a baby crying from inside the sanitary bin.
"The baby was subsequently taken to Penang Hospital for treatment," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
He said investigations, including checks on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, led to the woman's arrest at Bukit Jambul Complex to assist investigations.
"Further investigations led to the arrest of a 22-year-old Myanmar national who works as a security guard.
"The man was detained to assist investigations into the case and was also found to have failed to produce valid travel documents," he said.
Meanwhile, the Penang police contingent forensic team conducted an examination at the scene and collected several samples for analysis by the Chemistry Department.
Anuwal said the case was being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code, which relates to the abandonment of a child under 12 by a parent or person having care of the child.
"Further investigations are ongoing to determine the involvement of and connection between the individuals detained and the incident," he said.
He urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could affect police investigations.
