Woman loses RM245k to fake investment

TANGKAK: A 56-year-old entrepreneur lost over RM245,000 in a fake investment scheme she came across on social media.

Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said the woman, who is a palm oil entrepreneur, came across an advertisement promoting the investment scheme on TikTok on May 6.

“She was lured by promises of lucrative returns within a short period, as well as assurances that she would receive high returns on her capital.

“The victim made 18 transactions involving three different bank accounts between July 1 and Aug 22 believed to be mule accounts, resulting in total losses of RM245,403,” he said.

“We are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,” he added.

He advised the public to obtain the latest information on scams through the Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s social media platforms.

He also advised scam victims to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 as an early measure to try to stop the flow of funds from their accounts to the suspects’ accounts.
