GEORGE TOWN: Drugs disguised as packs of candy, ice lemon tea and hot chocolate were among more than RM3mil of items seized in four raids across Penang.
Seven Malaysians, including a woman, were arrested in the operations between Aug 15 and 22, said Penang police chief Comm Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng.
Police seized MDMA, ganja powder and buds, Erimin 5 pills, ecstasy, ketamine and methamphetamine in various forms.
Comm Lim said the first raid was carried out by the North Seberang Perai Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department in Butterworth on Aug 15.
A 23-year-old man was arrested with about 3kg of MDMA powder worth more than RM450,000.
Four days later, the same team arrested a 46-year-old man in Butterworth and seized about 1.3kg of MDMA powder worth more than RM10,000.
On the island, three men and a woman aged between 23 and 35 were arrested in Tanjung Tokong between Aug 15 and Aug 16.
Police seized about 38.3kg of ganja powder, 11.47kg of ganja buds, 4,004 Erimin 5 pills, 14kg of methamphetamine, 5kg of ketamine and 16kg of ecstasy pills.
The haul was worth more than RM1.17mil.
In the fourth operation, Central Seberang Perai narcotics police arrested a 28-year-old man in Bukit Mertajam on Aug 22.
They seized about 8.4kg of MDMA powder, 1,755 ecstasy pills, 1,000 Erimin 5 pills, 630g of ketamine and nine liquid methamphetamine cartridges worth more than RM1.38mil.
“The suspects are believed to have been actively involved in drug trafficking around Penang since May,” Comm Lim said at the state police headquarters in Jalan Penang yesterday.
Four tested positive for morphine, amphetamine or methamphetamine while five had previous criminal or drug-related records.
Comm Lim said items worth about RM89,000 were seized under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988.
The cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
He credited continuous intelligence gathering by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department and public information for the arrests.
