KUALA LUMPUR: Patriotism is not only reflected in what Malaysians do for the country, but also in the actions they choose to avoid, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
The Defence Minister said patriotism should go beyond symbolic acts and serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the nation’s founding generation and security forces.
He said Malaysians should refrain from using positions of trust, responsibility and power for personal gain, stressing that public service should not be a platform for seeking profit, popularity or temporary enjoyment.
“Love for the country is not only reflected in what we give, but also in what we choose not to take,” he said in his speech at the Defence Ministry-level launch of the 2026 Kibar Jalur Gemilang campaign in conjunction with National Month celebrations on Thursday (Aug 27).
Mohamed Khaled also called on Malaysians not to become a source of division or undermine the country’s social harmony.
“Malaysia is a country that has remained independent, peaceful and sovereign because of the understanding between races and religions. It is our uniqueness and strength that must be appreciated and defended,” he said.
He said Malaysians must avoid becoming racist, prejudiced or chauvinistic, and refrain from creating or spreading negative perceptions and suspicion that could threaten social harmony.
Mohamed Khaled also cautioned against becoming overly enamoured with foreign cultures to the point of belittling or abandoning Malaysia’s national identity.
Malaysia’s heritage, language, traditions and local way of life should not be regarded as outdated or embarrassing simply because of changing global trends, he said.
He also expressed disagreement with those planning to boycott National Day celebrations over sentiments surrounding issues such as the Rohingya crisis.
“I strongly disagree with those who plan to boycott the National Day celebrations merely because of certain sentiments, such as the Rohingya issue,” he said.
“Malaysia is the land where we were born. Malaysia is our home.”
Mohamed Khaled said Malaysians should not lose the opportunity to express their love for the country because of dissatisfaction over certain issues affecting the nation.
He urged Malaysians to cherish the blessings of living in a peaceful, prosperous and independent country and to play their part in developing, protecting and safeguarding its sovereignty.
“Let this year be the year we make a resolution – a resolution not to do anything that could tarnish that sovereignty,” he said.
Mohamed Khaled also urged Malaysians to fly the Jalur Gemilang with pride and gratitude, while remembering to pray for the well-being of the country, security personnel serving at the borders and all Malaysians.
