PM orders probe into crash that killed three people

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered an immediate investigation into an accident involving an Immigration Department truck, in which a man and his two daughters were killed.

The Prime Minister said action must be taken if the investigation found any negligence or breach of the law.

“I have instructed the Immigration Department to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation.

“If there was any negligence or violation of the law, appropriate action must be taken without compromise,” he said in a Facebook post.

The Prime Minister also extended his condolences to the family.

In the 1am incident yesterday, the victims were hit by an Immigration Department truck that veered off course following a collision at a traffic light intersection along Jalan Sultan Ismail.

The accident happened when the empty truck was travelling from Kuala Lumpur Immigration office towards Chow Kit to pick up detainees following an operation on illegal immigrants in the area.

The truck is among the vehicles the department uses to transport detainees.

Meanwhile, Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the department would re-examine its standard operating procedures (SOPs) following the accident.

He said the department would fully cooperate with the police and that it would also carry out its own review of existing SOPs.

“From the legal aspect, the department will cooperate with the police in their investigations.

“We will also investigate the issue ourselves from all angles, including looking into the set SOPs that are already in place,” he said.

The department, however, did not specify how long its internal review would take.
