PETALING JAYA: Bersatu has rejected PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s claim that the party is out of Perikatan Nasional, saying it remains a legitimate member of the coalition and will lodge a complaint with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) over the matter.
Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said no clause in the Perikatan constitution provides for the automatic termination of a member party’s membership.
“Bersatu’s status as a member of Perikatan can only be finalised by the presidential council in accordance with Clause 7A of the coalition’s constitution.
“To date, the presidential council has never convened to determine Bersatu’s membership status in Perikatan. Therefore, Bersatu remains a legitimate member party of Perikatan Nasional,” he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 7).
Earlier, Abdul Hadi said Bersatu had effectively removed itself from Perikatan after announcing plans to form a new coalition.
Azmin also hit out at Hadi, saying the PAS president had no authority or veto power to determine Bersatu’s position in Perikatan.
“His (Abdul Hadi’s) reckless statement shows that he lacks basic knowledge of the coalition’s constitution,” said Azmin.
Azmin said the Perikatan chairman and secretary-general prevented Bersatu representatives from attending the coalition’s supreme council meeting on July 16, 2026, which was contrary to the Perikatan constitution.
He said the meeting had decided on seat allocations and cooperation with Barisan Nasional in the recent Negri Sembilan state election.
“Bersatu will lodge an official complaint with the ROS over this serious breach of the constitution.
“Perikatan, which is controlled by PAS, no longer upholds its own constitution, has sidelined the principles of good governance, and has acted recklessly and undemocratically.
“Bersatu firmly maintains that it will act in accordance with the law and the Federal Constitution, while continuing to uphold the principles of justice and moderation in securing a dignified and prosperous future for all Malaysians,” said Azmin.
