PUTRAJAYA: Over 1,600 complaints have been lodged with the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) since 2023, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
The Home Minister said statistics showed a total of 1,635 complaints were recorded from 2023 until July 24 this year.
A total of 844 complaints had been resolved in the same period.
“For this year, we have recorded 372 cases.
“Most of the complaints were related to not having a follow-up response after a police report was lodged,” he told reporters after the ministry’s monthly assembly yesterday.
Saifuddin Nasution said of these cases, 11 investigation papers were still active and under investigation.
He added that the powers of the IPCC were clear and that criminal and corruption matters would be referred to the Criminal Investigation Department and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission respectively.
“Even though a total of 1,635 cases is relatively low, this shows a growing trust and acceptance from the people on the function and existence of the IPCC,” he said.
On an unrelated matter, Saifuddin Nasution said the arrest of 12 policemen over the alleged extortion of RM2mil from a foreign national showed that the police force would not compromise on internal misconduct.
“Police have taken prompt action by arresting and detaining the suspects involved in the case.
“This is a strong and clear message that the police will not compromise on those who committed a crime, even their own personnel,” he said.
