PORT DICKSON: Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has criticised recent remarks by Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, describing them as outdated.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, warned against stirring up racial tensions, saying Malaysia is a multiracial society.
“If you want to be friends, be sincere or else just stay put in Kedah and focus on governing the state,” he said during a programme with the Indian community here on Saturday (July 25).
The Deputy Prime Minister’s strongly worded statement received loud cheers from the floor as well.
This comes after Muhammad Sanusi, who is also Perikatan Nasional election director, had allegedly said during a ceramah that “Tanah Melayu” was the only homeland for the Malays, unlike other ethnic groups.
Barisan and Perikatan currently have an electoral understanding for the state polls.
Ahmad Zahid also affirmed that he is colour-blind, stressing the importance of education towards enhancing social mobility.
“All Malaysians regardless of background must have equal access to education.
“That is why there is no discrimination in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system,” he said.
Polling day for the Negri Sembilan elections is set for Aug 1.
