KUCHING: State-owned Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) has begun its first oil production of 800 barrels per day at the Adong Kechil West field near Marudi, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
The Sarawak Premier announced the production as a "gift" to Sarawakians during the Sarawak Day celebration in Sibu on Wednesday (July 22) night. He said the production, which commenced this week, was equivalent to 24,000 barrels per month and marked the state's first onshore oil production in 50 years.
“With this new and historic production, Sarawak is on the right track to go downstream, particularly in the production of ammonia and blue hydrogen. This achievement speaks well of the engineering capability of Sarawakians, proving that Sarawak is well-equipped to be a strong player in the oil and gas industry,” he said.
Abang Johari also announced state-owned AirBorneo's first international flight from Kuching to Singapore on Wednesday as another gift to the people of Sarawak.
“In two months' time, our airline will fly to Jakarta. This is how we are developing the aviation industry, which will have a significant impact on our economy. AirBorneo reflects our commitment to strengthen connectivity, stimulate trade, expand tourism and attract more investment to the state,” he said.
In addition, Abang Johari spoke on Sarawak's ambitions to develop green energy, hydrogen and low-carbon industries as part of its growth strategy. He said this would not only benefit Sarawakians but also help Malaysia to reduce carbon emissions, increase the use of renewable energy and strengthen energy security.
“This is why I have often said that Sarawak's development should be seen as a part of Malaysia's economic development. When Sarawak becomes a green energy hub, Malaysia will have a strong energy foundation to attract investment, develop new industries and compete globally,” the Premier said.
He added that Sarawak aspired to be Malaysia's gateway to a green economy and a major contributor to the national economy.
“I believe that when Sarawak becomes stronger, Malaysia will also become stronger. This is the true spirit of federalism. (It's) not competing among ourselves or focusing development on one region only, but mutually strengthening the nation with our respective strengths,” he said.
