Sara aid may increase with economic performance

IPOH: The Prime Minister has hinted that assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme may be increased if the country’s economic situation allows.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) said this was discussed with Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Johan Mahmood Merican on Saturday and would be considered in the upcoming Budget.

“In the Budget, I will look at how we can increase the allocation to help the people,” he said at the Madani Kita event.

Anwar said the government was aware that while measures such as the reduction in fuel prices had helped ease the burden on the people, the rising cost of goods remains a challenge.

“For example, we import onions from India because we do not produce enough locally. When there are supply issues, prices increase. These are matters we need to address.”

The Prime Minister said the government will continue looking for ways to assist the people, including expanding the Jualan Rahmah initiative to help lower living costs.

He said the government is also giving due attention to the welfare of security personnel, including Rela members, who help respond to the country’s security crises and disasters. An allocation of RM3mil had been approved for Rela this year, he added.

“I discussed with the Home Minister and agreed that we need to look into their welfare. They are the nation’s extended security force, helping the government and the people.

“I have instructed the director- general to speed up the process and identify homes that need repairs and carry out the improvements.”
