PETALING JAYA: The hope of giving others a new lease on life motivated three Malaysians to pledge their organs for donation.
Maria K. Rajeswary, 80, said with thousands waiting for life-saving organ transplants, she hopes her pledge will help make a difference.
“When a person is no more, the body and organs are buried or cremated. If the organs can help someone else live longer, why let them go to waste?” she asked.
For admin executive Elaine Lim, 30, becoming an organ donor was a carefully considered decision made in 2014.
She said she reflected on how she could continue helping others even after her death, adding that her siblings also followed suit in pledging their organs.
“By donating my organs, I may give someone else a second chance at life. Even if only one person is helped, that will be good enough for me,” she said.
Teacher Ann Sebastian, 29, said that soon after signing up as a donor, she informed her family of it to ensure they will fulfil her wish.
“I told them clearly because I do not want any hesitation or objection when the moment comes. They know my wish and understand how important it is to me,” she said.
Sebastian said her decision to register as a donor was made when a fellow student approached her on campus during an organ donation drive.
“I was walking across the university when someone came up and asked if I would like to save a life.
“I said yes and told her to sign me up. It gave me inner peace.” she said.
