Media council, Putrajaya working on law reforms to better manage online content

KUCHING: The Malaysian Media Council (MMC) is working with the Federal Government on law reforms to regulate online content.

Its deputy chairman Premesh Chandran said there is an increasing amount of different types of information on social media, including fake news generated by artificial intelligence (AI), which is not regulated.

"We are working with the Federal Government to see what we can do with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure that we can remove disinformation and misinformation on social media," he said at the Sarawak Media Conference here on Thursday (July 16).

Premesh said MMC is also working towards formulating ethical standards for influencers and content creators to ensure their professionalism.

"Nothing wrong with being an influencer or content creator, but the information that you put forward must be accurate and fair.

"And if it’s wrong, there has to be some form of repercussions," he said, adding that the law reforms aimed to support professional media while discouraging unethical content.

Premesh also said MMC's formation was a recognition that the media industry in Malaysia had matured and was capable of self-regulation through its code of conduct.

"If anybody has a complaint against the media, they can launch it and we can rectify it," he said.
