Freedom of Information Bill set to be tabled today

PETALING JAYA: Seven Bills, including the long-awaited Freedom of Information Bill, are slated to be tabled for the first reading today as the current Dewan Rakyat’s meeting enters its final week.

According to the order paper for July 13, the Freedom of Information Bill 2026 is one of the four Bills parked under the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

Penang and Selangor have already enacted their own state enactments on freedom of information.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran previously said the government remains committed to introducing the Freedom of Information Bill as part of its institutional reform agenda.

He said the Legal Affairs Division began nationwide stakeholder engagement in 2019, involving about 2,500 participants.

“The government also conducted a public survey involving about 8,000 respondents to gather views on the proposed law,” he added.

Kulasegaran said the government had approved the policy for the proposed Act in 2025 and established a pro tem task force to oversee the drafting of the legislation.

Aside from that, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department is also expected to table the Admiralty Jurisdiction Bill 2026 and two amendment Bills.

The amendment Bills are the Witness Protection (Amendment) Bill 2026 and Courts of Judicature (Amendment) Bill 2026.

Another long-awaited Bill that will be tabled today is the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry’s Social Work Profession Bill 2026.
