Form Six student dies after collapsing during school activity in Melaka

MELAKA: A Form Six student died after collapsing while queuing for a co-curricular orientation programme at a secondary school in Jalan Chan Koon Cheng here.

Acting Melaka Tengah OCPD Superintendent Halim Abas said the 18-year-old suddenly collapsed at about 2.40pm while standing in a classroom corridor with his classmates on Wednesday (July 8).

He said the victim was rushed to Hospital Melaka. There, medical personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for about 68 minutes before the victim was pronounced dead at 7.11pm on the same day.

On Thursday (July 9), Supt Halim said interviews with the victim's mother revealed that the teenager had no known medical history and had not complained of feeling unwell before the incident.

He said the victim, the eldest of two siblings, had only been enrolled in the school's Form Six programme for three weeks and was actively involved in sports.

Supt Halim said a post-mortem conducted on Thursday confirmed the cause of death as coronary artery anomalies, a congenital defect affecting the coronary arteries.

"The case has been classified as a sudden death, and no criminal elements were detected," he added.
