JOHOR BARU: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry said Malaysia is in talks with Thailand and China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) to establish a land route for durian exports to China, in a move aimed at cutting logistics costs and expanding market access for growers.
The ministry said the initiative is expected to ease a current durian glut following simultaneous harvests in several states, which have driven down farm-gate prices. Land and rail transport would also allow Malaysian durians to reach smaller Chinese cities with strong demand, it added.
It said overlapping harvests in states including Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Johor and Pahang have contributed to oversupply, although consumers are now benefiting from lower prices for premium varieties such as Musang King and Black Thorn.
Efforts are also underway to strengthen Malaysia’s food security, the ministry said.
