KUALA LUMPUR: Over three million active Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members have achieved the basic savings threshold of RM390,000, says Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong.
He said 3.04 million (38.3%) of the current 7.94 million EPF contributors in the 18 to 60 years old age group have hit the basic saving threshold as of May 31, 2026.

“This is a notable increase over the 2.71 million out of 7.74mil active EPF members of the same age group that hit the RM390,000 basic savings threshold as of May 31 last year,” he told Dewan Rakyat on Monday (July 6).
Liew was responding to Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH–Port Dickson) who asked about government measures to ensure Malaysians have adequate retirement savings amid high costs of living and an ageing nation.
He attributed the increase to the government’s various efforts to strengthen EPF contribution coverage over the last year or so.
This includes the i-Saraan Plus programme, introduced at the start of this year, a voluntary contribution scheme for gig workers, e-hailing drivers and delivery riders, as well as self-employed Malaysians.
Other schemes introduced at the start of this year include i-Simpan for self-contribution and i-Topup for voluntary excess contributions (amounts exceeding the statutory rate).
He also said the i-Legasi scheme has seen a total of 63 applications approved with 86 recipients, receiving transfer amounts totaling RM46.3mil as of May this year.
Introduced in February this year, the i-Legasi scheme allows contributors aged 55 and above to pass down their retirement savings to their children.
“The government and EPF will continue to strengthen close cooperation in formulating holistic financial policies and mechanisms, to enhance the adequacy of retirement savings and ensure the financial well-being of EPF members in the future,” he added.
