Selangor reviews halal waste guidelines amid confusion

PETALING JAYA: The policy on halal and non-halal waste separation in Selangor is not new and has been implemented for over a decade, says Datuk Ng Suee Lim.

The Selangor local government committee chairman said the provision, which was found under the 2025 Selangor Planning Guidelines and Standards, has been used since the second edition of the guideline in 2010.

"The provision refers to waste collection areas at supermarkets and hypermarkets, not the public garbage bins used by the people.

"The practice has been implemented in relevant premises without causing issues to the respective operations or the people," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 21).

Ng, however, said the provision in the latest guideline has caused misinterpretation, confusion and questions related to the implementation on the ground.

He said the state would review several aspects of the implementation to ensure a more practical, clear and in line with current needs.

"The state, together with PLANMalaysia Selangor, will study the provision again to strengthen the existing guideline, including getting views from non-governmental organisations, industry players, local councils, and relevant agencies.

"This is to ensure the guideline remains relevant and practical to implement, taking into consideration the reality of operations on the ground and alignment with policies and guidelines used by the Housing and Local Government Ministry," he said.

"The move taken is not to introduce new policies, but to improve and streamline the existing guidelines so that it fulfills current needs and protect the interests of the people," he added.
